Danjong Cultural Festival

The Danjong Cultural Festival is Yeongwol's representative local cultural festival that elevates the spirits of Danjong, the 6th king of the Joseon Dynasty, and his loyal subjects into a celebration. Started in 1967 under the name "Danjongje," the festival changed its name to the "Danjong Cultural Festival" starting with its 24th edition in 1990 and continues to engage visitors with a variety of experiences to this day. The 58th Danjong Cultural Festival will be held for three days from April 24 (Fri) to 26 (Sun), 2026, in Yeongwol, home to Jangneung, the tomb of the 6th King Danjong. This year's festival is scheduled to feature a diverse range of events, including the state funeral of King Danjong, the ancestral rites for King Danjong, the Queen Jeongsun Selection Contest, a tug-of-war using kudzu vines, hands-on activities, participatory events, and performances.
