Details

Jindo Mysterious Sea Road, designated as National Scenic Site No. 9, is a phenomenon in which the sea road between Hoedong-ri in Gogun-myeon and Modo-ri in Uisin-myeon, approximately 2 km long, becomes exposed due to the difference in tides when the water level drops from the second to the third month of the lunar calendar. It spreads out wide to a width of 30 to 40 meters, and its mystery is extraordinary. Every year during the festival, numerous domestic and international tourists visit Jindo to witness this phenomenon and enjoy the miraculous moment for about an hour when the sea road is completely exposed. During the Mysterious Sea Road Festival, Jindo County showcases Jindo's brilliant intangible heritage, including Jindo Arirang, Ganggangsullae, Namdo Deulnorae, Jindo Ssitgimgut, Jindo Dasiraegi, Jindo Manga, and Jindo Buknori, while providing a wealth of sights and entertainment through various events to boost the excitement of tourists. The Jindo Mysterious Sea Road, connecting Hoedong and Modo, became widely known internationally in 1975 when Pierre Landy, the French Ambassador to Korea, visited to see the Jindo Dog (Natural Monument No. 53), witnessed the bizarre sea road phenomenon, and introduced it in a French newspaper as a modern-day miracle of Moses. In 1996, popular Japanese singer Yoshimi Tendo sang the hit song "Jindo Monogatari" (Story of Jindo), which was themed around the mysterious sea road of Jindo, and many Japanese tourists have been visiting every year.
