Details
The foundation of the Eumseong Pumba Festival lies in the life of the late Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong, the "Beggar Saint." He is the figure who inspired Father Oh Woong-jin to establish Kkottongne. Despite his own physical disability, he went around the neighborhoods of Mugeuk-ri in Geumwang-eup collecting food to feed beggars who were unable to even beg. For this reason, his life is regarded as that of a saint of love that no one can imitate. Legends regarding "Pumba" have been passed down in various forms. It is traditionally understood as an onomatopoeia serving as a rhythmic melody used in the refrain of Gakseori Taryeong (traditional Korean street performer songs). The Eumseong Pumba Festival combines the spirit of philanthropy of Grandfather Choi Gwi-dong with the "Pumba," which has traditionally solidified as a synonym for itinerant merchants. Although our lives in the modern era have become more affluent, spiritual poverty and inequality still persist. The festival was born with the premise that we must experience catharsis through satire and humor in such a society and "heal it through love and sharing." Furthermore, the Eumseong Pumba Festival is a spiritual and cultural festival that practices love and sharing.
