Lantern Festival

The Lotus Lantern Festival features a procession of lotus lanterns extending from Dongdaemun Stadium to Jogyesa Temple, as well as traditional culture events, a gathering event (lotus lantern Dharma service), and a closing ceremony (Great Unity Festival). With a long history spanning over 1,200 years and preserved as a living cultural heritage, the Lotus Lantern Festival was recognized for its value as an intangible heritage and designated as a National Intangible Cultural Property in April 2012. Recognized globally for the values of a voluntary community, generational transmission embodying individual creativity, and the values of participation, consideration, and equality among diverse people, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2020.
